Join us at Covent Garden Hotel for another evening with THESP, bringing you more stories from the stage. This time we'll be taking a closer look at the role of a set designer with an esteemed panel, including Derek McLane Moulin Rouge, Anything Goes, The Sound of Music, Hairspray, Tom Pye My Neighbour Totoro, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Medea, Gentleman Jack and Georgia Lowe Lyonesse, Grenfell, Winner of the 2023 Evening Standard Award for Best Design for The Good Person of Szechwan, who’ll be in conversation with THESP Founder, Gilly Hopper, discussing the worlds they create and how they build them.
The event will start promptly at 6.30pm, finishing by 7.30pm.

Derek McLane
Derek McLane is an Emmy and Tony Award-winning production designer for Broadway and television, who’s nearly 350 designs include Moulin Rouge!, A Soldier’s Play, 33 Variations with Jane Fonda, How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying with Daniel Radcliffe, Anything Goes, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo with Robin Williams, The Sound of Music and Hairspray. Derek is also Chairman of the Board of The New Group Theatre.
Tom Pye
Tom Pye's career spans the genres of theatre, ballet, opera and film with productions including My Neighbour Totoro, for which he won the Olivier Awards Best Set Design earlier this year, Medea starring Fiona Shaw, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring Imelda Staunton, A Christmas Carol starring Jim Broadbent, Cinderella at The Royal Ballet, The Hours at The Metropolitan Opera, Onegin at ENO/Metropolitan Opera, The Cunning Little Vixen at Glyndebourne and Gentleman Jack for HBO/BBC, among many others.
Georgia Lowe
Georgia recently won the 2023 Evening Standard Award for her design for The Good Person of Szechwan Sheffield Crucible/Lyric/ETT. She trained on The Motley Theatre Design Course and was a Linbury Prize finalist in 2011. She was resident design assistant at the RSC between 2011 and 2012. She is currently designing The Crucible for Sheffield Crucible and the transfer of Grenfell: in the words of survivors to St Ann’s Warehouse in New York. Recent designs include: Lyonesse at Harold Pinter Theatre, The Trials at Donmar Warehouse, and Henry VIII at The Globe.
Gilly Hopper
Gilly is a freelance journalist and the Founder of THESP, a social club dedicated to theatre.

4. Occasionally, events are cancelled or postponed by the promoter, team, performer or venue for a variety of reasons. If the event is cancelled, please contact us for information on receiving a refund from the responsible party. If the event was moved or rescheduled, the venue or promoter may set refund limitations. It is your responsibility to ascertain the date and time of any rearranged event.
5. The venue reserves the right to refuse admission and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.
6. Every effort to admit latecomers will be made at a suitable break in the event, but admission cannot always be guaranteed.
7. We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase.
8. Tickets are sold subject to the venue or promoter's right to alter or vary the programme due to events or circumstances beyond its control without being obliged to refund monies or exchange tickets.
9. If this ticket is re-sold or transferred for profit or commercial gain by anyone other than the promoter, venue management, DesignMyNight or one of their authorised sub-agents, it will become voidable and the holder may be
refused entry to or ejected from the venue.
